SURF CAFE & RETAIL STORE

Completed in 2016, this project brought together a coastal cafe and retail surf store, with the two spaces connected by a pair of intricately hand carved Balinese timber double doors, encouraging flow and interaction when open, yet allowing each space the option of operating as a stand alone venue when required.

The focus of the project was not only the aesthetics but the functionality of the cafe, both for staff workflow and customer experience. To ensure optimal efficiency, the interior was designed in consultation with a professional coffee judge, resulting in a meticulously considered barista station that housed a 'Rancilio' coffee machine and in-built jug rinser, along with display cabinet, ice machine, and a variety of commercial fridges and freezers.

The material palette blended durability with aesthetic appeal. Customer facing elements featured concrete look stone bench tops with waterfall edges and a whitewashed timber clad front, with ambient lighting, evoking a relaxed, beachside feel. Behind the scenes, practical dark laminate cabinetry supported the demands of a fast paced hospitality environment, with functional task lighting. A custom designed spiral copper water tap added a striking point of detail and craftsmanship.

The aesthetic drew inspiration from the casual charm of a beach shack layered with modern coastal touches and urban cafe style. This was paired with vintage surfboards and memorabilia throughout the cafe and adjoining retail space, which specialised in collectible boards and curated surf heritage pieces. This created a holistic destination for lovers of surf, coffee, and coastal lifestyle.
